Maintains and supports positive nitrogen and acid-base balance, lymphocytes and intestinal cell enterocytes in the body. L-glutamine is the most prevalent amino acid in the blood. Human cells readily manufacture L-glutamine and under normal circumstances, dietary intake and production of L-glutamine is sufficient. However, in times of stress or increased energy output, the body's tissues need more L-glutamine than usual. Awareness of the effects of physical stress and the stress created by aging and "dis-eased" bodies is driving demand for L-Glutamine supplements.

L-Glutamine has recently been the focus of much scientific interest. Skeletal muscle contains the greatest intracellular concentration of glutamine, comprising up to 60 percent of total body glutamine stores, and is considered the  primary storage depot of glutamine, and thus the primary exporter of glutamine to other tissues. A growing body of evidence suggests that during certain stressful times, the body may require more glutamine than it can produce. During metabolic stress, glutamine is released into circulation where it is transported to the tissue in need. Intracellular skeletal muscle glutamine concentration is affected by various assaults including injury, sepsis, prolonged stress, and starvation. Under these circumstances Glutamine may be considered a "conditionally essential" amino acid. Glutamine is involved in maintaining a positive nitrogen balance (an anabolic state whereby muscle can grow) and also is the primary metabolic fuel for rapidly growing cells (immune system lymphocytes and intestinal cell enterocytes). In addition, Glutamine is a regulator of acid-base balance and the body’s primary nitrogen transporter to muscle cells. NOW uses the natural free-form isomer to enhance bioavailability of this important nutrient.
