A free radical is an atom or group of atoms that contains at least one unpaired electron. When electrons are unpaired, they can easily bond with other atoms which causes a chemical reaction. Excessive free radicals cause oxidative damage to vital heart muscle cells, nerve cells and immune system sensor cells. Oxidative stress has been linked to cancer, aging, inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
Fortunately, antioxidants protect cells from the damaging effect of reactive oxygen species.
